West Point Visitor Center

Completion, Spring 2018

With continuing enhancement of the modern, multi-disciplinary U.S. Army, West Point desired to enhance its own introduction to the public through its Visitor Center. MBTA’s scheme removes a decades-old addition to the existing Visitors Center and both connects the Center to the adjacent West Point Museum and reasserts the axial disposition of the Museum’s tower over the site. Along the resulting promenade, MBTA creates a central plaza as a public gathering space shaped to evoke West Point’s fabled parade grounds. The addition is strategically placed between the re-oriented Center and the West Point Museum, giving form to a new entrance from the Plaza to the Visitors Center. With its massive, masonry side walls contrasting the lightness of its structural glass walls and space-frame roof, the addition serves as monumental gateway, framing a dramatic and historic view of the Hudson River Valley. The project includes an open space reception lobby, information center, 8,000 square foot exhibit space, gift shop and administration suite.
